Nicole Whelan is a writer and filmmaker who works across games, film, and art. She has written for some of the biggest studios in the video game industry, including Rockstar Games and 2K, where she was part of the writing teams behind the best-selling action-adventure series Grand Theft Auto and the sci-fi spy thriller The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.
Her screenwriting has earned awards at numerous festivals, including the Austin Film Festival, where she now serves as a script reader. She also works as a script consultant, contributing punch-ups for projects, including one in development at PopTV. Her recent award-winning shorts include collaborations with creatives from Good Trouble and the women of GLOW, expanding her storytelling into independent film.
Beyond her work in film and games, she played in an art-rock grrrl band in Brooklyn and worked as a creative producer for an artist’s studio in Los Angeles, helping to produce large-scale public art installations, including one for Banksy’s Dismaland. And as a longtime member of art collectives in New York and Los Angeles, she brings that collaborative energy into her current work, producing and directing shorts, music videos, and developing new screenplays and spec projects.
Ms. Whelan studied English Literature and Art History at Stanford University and later Filmmaking at CalArts. She lives in Los Angeles.
